Explain the difference between e.m.f and p.d.
The amount of energy supplied to each unit of charge is called the electromotive force (emf)
For charge to flow in a circuit there must be a
potential difference (PD) applied across the circuit. This is often supplied in the form of a battery that has a positive terminal and a negative terminal
In layman terms: emf stands for the amount of energy supplied while pd forms the ‘slide’ by which electrons can move.
